Are you suffering from pain in your jaw? Most people get jaw pain from time to time, but when the jaw pain becomes constant, it's time to get some advice. Over 10 million Americans suffer from jaw pain each year, and there are lots of reasons people have jaw pain. If you are suffering from jaw pain, here are some things you can do to ease the pain.
Figure Out What Is Causing the Pain
Jaw pain can come in many forms, so it's important to figure out exactly where the pain might be coming from. If your jaw pain is centered around a tooth, you may have a cavity. If the jaw pain is severe, and you are running a fever, you may have an abscessed tooth, especially if there is swelling in the area. If you are hurting along your jaw joint, you may have inflamed it. Often jaw pain in your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) means you clench or grind your teeth at night.
How Can I Fix Jaw Pain?
First, to ease your jaw pain, consider icing the area along your jaw that is hurting. Apply an ice bag to the affected area for 20-30 minutes. Also, try and mitigate the pain you are feeling by taking some over-the-counter pain relievers. Avoid eating foods that are hard or crunchy, as this might irritate your jaw further. You can also look for over-the-counter night guards for your teeth to protect them from clenching and grinding. If they seem to work, you may want to look for night guards that are formatted especially for your teeth. However, if your jaw pain is severe, if you are running a fever, or if you see a lump or swollen area, you need to consult a dentist as soon as possible. That way, your jaw pain doesn't get any worse.
