Can a Bite Misalignment Be Corrected by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?

Posted on 3/8/2021 by Dr. Shaun Rai
Can a Bite Misalignment Be Corrected by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon?Bite misalignment includes underbites and overbites. An underbite occurs when your lower teeth overlap the upper teeth, while an overbite occurs when the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth. These misalignments may result from extra teeth, pacifier use, thumb sucking during childhood, and tongue thrusting. Severe bite misalignments require surgery to correct, and if untreated, they may cause dental problems.

Effects of Bite Misalignment

In severe cases, bite misalignments will affect chewing and speech capabilities. It may also cause obstructive sleep apnea and temporomandibular disorder. Bite misalignment can also affect an individual's esteem by affecting their smile and facial profile. While mild cases of bite misalignment can be corrected through tooth extractions, braces, and restorative dental procedures, severe cases require surgery. Therefore, if you have a bite misalignment, scheduling surgery with our oral and maxillofacial surgeon will be ideal for correcting the defect.

Bite Misalignment Correction Surgery with Our Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon

If you have severe jaw misalignment that affects how you eat, chew or sleep, our oral and maxillofacial surgeon will conduct an orthognathic surgery on you. Usually, we will administer anesthesia to ensure you are comfortable during surgery. During this surgery, we may modify your jaw after separation or opt to build a new piece depending on the extent of misalignment. To do this, we will use screws, plates, and wires. After surgery, you can go home on the same day, but you can stay for a day or two in the hospital for examination and monitoring if necessary. However, you should resume normal activities three weeks after surgery, but it will need up to a year for total recovery. To ensure you heal with a proper bite, we will monitor your healing until you recover fully. For more information on bite misalignment and treatment, contact us today.
