What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a small titanium post that replaces the root of a lost tooth. On top of the Implant is an abutment, which in turn is connected to the crown (replacement tooth). The crown is custom-made to match your natural teeth.

Why are dental implants so popular?

Dental implants are the most effective replacement for lost teeth. They look and function just like normal teeth, and unlike other tooth replacement procedures, they don’t click or slip when you speak or eat. Not only that, they stimulate your jawbone and keep it healthy.

How much do dental implants cost?

No two patients are alike. The number of appointments and procedures you’ll need will depend on your specific needs. Check with your insurance carrier to see how much they’ll cover.

How long does the procedure take?

Again, this depends on the patient. After Shaun B. Rai DMD completes his diagnosis, he’ll give you a treatment plan that includes the estimated amount of time we’ll need for the procedure. The total time depends on your personal needs, your medical and dental history, the health of your jawbone, and the method and materials we’ll use. For some patients, it only takes a few months, but for those with complex conditions, it can take more than a year.

Are dental implants safe?

Dentists have used dental implants for half a century. They are proven safe and effective. Our trained staff knows how to minimize any complications and skillfully handle any problems that might arise. We cannot overstate how important it is for you to review with us your medical history and any factors (such as diabetes or smoking) that could affect the procedure. We want you to stay fully informed about the benefits and risks involved throughout the process.

Is the implant procedure painful?

Many patients’ worries about pain are alleviated once they learn about the sedatives we provide during treatment and the helpful instructions for home care. They often return to work and other activities the following day. While some patients report a bit of discomfort or bruising, this usually doesn’t last very long.

Can children get dental implants?

Dental implants are a highly effective long-term solution for children who have lost permanent teeth. We recommend consulting with us as soon as possible after the loss of teeth. It’s important to keep in mind that the jaw continues to grow into the late teens, so we usually wait to perform the procedure until after this time. In general, facial growth and development are completed at around age 18 for boys and age 16 for girls.

How do I care for my dental implants?

You care for your dental implants just like you would for your natural teeth, namely, by brushing, flossing, and coming into our office for regular check-ups and cleanings. If your dental implants are placed effectively and properly cared for, they can last for decades.
